3rd Annual School Garden Open House
Saturday, September 28, 2013

Hello Garden Coordinators!

September may be the last thing on your mind as the end of the school year is upon us, but please consider holding an Open House at your garden project this fall!

It’s a great way to highlight your program’s achievements, build support among your school and community, and even acquire new volunteers and donors.

A little planning now will pay off. You could:
plant fun crops now for a display in the fall;
pumpkins, sunflowers, popcorn, gourds
recruit some of your parents or volunteers to form
a planning committee
get your kids involved by making posters, flyers, art project to use
as you clean up from this school year, sort out garden-related work that your students have done for display at the event
get your event up on the school calendar for next year

Over the summer, you could take a few ‘field trips’ within your community to recruit presenters and helpers, such as local farmers, garden clubbers, community garden participants, chefs and artists.

We have timed the Open House to fall at the end of Maine Harvest Lunch Week, so that the weeks focus on local food and agriculture can be a natural lead-in to your garden project event.

There’s lots of info up on our website to help you plan! Thanks for all the work you do to bring a gardening experience to your kids.
