Happy 2013!

The Maine School Garden Network Board Members went through a rigorous hiring process in late 2012 to hire the first ever MSGN Coordinator. Suzanne Balbo, an elementary teacher for the past 10 years, joined the MSGN in January. She will be working on connections between local farmers and schools, growing funding for school gardens through grants, and keeping the website current with upcoming events and learning opportunities.

The MSGN had a presence at the Maine Agricultural Trade Show at the Civic Center in Augusta on January 8-10. At the show, several local farmers were eager to make connections with their communities’ school garden or help in other ways. The MSGN shared a table with Maine Ag in the Classroom, and both tables attracted many educators and farmers.

Please mark your calendars now for the Maine School Garden Day held at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Maine on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. You can go to http://www.agclassroom.org/me/programs/garden_day.htm to register.

Also, please note a new and exciting teacher page under Resources! This new site, called Teach Me Food and Farms, is an incredible resource for teachers and staff working with children in and around school gardens. Please check the website out and pass it along to other educators.

If you know of a school garden that is not registered in our directory, please encourage them to sign up, or contact me directly at Suzanne.E.Balbo@maine.gov . We are working hard to have a current and up-to-date directory.

Happy Gardening!
