Our Goal 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Our school has set a goal of becoming self-sufficient in food production in four years. How will we do it?

Partnerships and other ideas.

Let's discuss.

Hi jpincince,
Wow, thats a laudible goal, but there are a lot of things to think about!
Does your school have a garden already?
Do you have a cafeteria set up to cook fresh food? (see Farm to School projects)
Do you want to include protein sources such as meat, milk and eggs?
Are you able to can, freeze, or otherwise preserve fruit and vegetables?

Food self-sufficiency is hard in Maine! Have you read Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle?

That's a very good goal indeed. Total self-sufficiency would be awesome. Some good ways to get started are of course, with a garden - is there a location available for a garden near your school?
