“Gardens Grow Kids”

Children’s Art Contest

for children entering grades 4 to 8 in Sept. 2010

The Maine School Garden Network announces their first-ever children’s art contest, and invites all Maine youth entering grades 4 to 8 to enter a piece of original artwork. The contest is open to all Maine children who enjoy gardening, but we especially hope to reach kids through school gardens, community gardens, summer camps, and other programs with youth gardening projects.

The theme is “Gardens Grow Kids,” and we are excited to see kids’ creative responses to this theme!   Here are some ideas to help get you started:

1. What’s your favorite part of gardening?
2. What is something you have learned through gardening?
3. What is your favorite garden project or plant?
4. How has gardening helped you or a friend to grow?

Each submission should be original artwork (pencil or crayon drawing, painting, or other flat media) on paper sized 8 ½” by 11”, up to 11” by 17”.  You must include a signed registration form (see below), and for those who would like their artwork returned, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your submission.  Be sure to include your contact information with your artwork!   Because of limitations in reproducing images on tee-shirts, please do not submit photographs, or pictures with drawn borders.

Submissions must be postmarked by Saturday, August 14^th!

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finalists, and the winning piece of art will be printed on posters and t-shirts, displayed on our website, and included in press releases.  Winning entries will be announced at the Common Ground Country Fair in Unity (www.mofga.org) on Friday, September 24th, 2010.   Thank you and good luck!
