Hello Educators and Gardeners,
As we all move into the harvest of late summer and the impending school year, we want to remind you of the upcoming School Garden Open House day which is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st. Hopefully your school participates in the Maine Harvest Lunch week the last week of September, and opening your school garden to the public for tours and fun activities on that Saturday could be a way for your students to really celebrate local, fresh, healthy food and the hard work they have put into their garden.

Some suggestions for Open House activities are now up on our website. There is also a link to a page of great resources for Maine Harvest Lunch Week, which includes a curriculum booklet and set of recipes designed to be used in a school cafeteria.

Thank you to those who have already sent us an email about participating in the Open House; you will be getting more communication from us soon about materials and resources you can use. Please make sure we have the full name and address of your school/organization, as Maine Ag In The Classroom has some educational books and activities they would like to send along to you.

If you are coming to the Common Ground Country Fair the weekend of Sept. 23-24, make sure you check out MOFGA’s website (www.mofga.org) for resources you can use with your students. And visit us at the Young Maine tent right next to the Sunflower Common. We have some interesting displays and speakers for you this year!

One more thing: if you were one of the teachers who attended Maine School Garden Day this spring, and you took some bean seeds for your garden, please let us know how they are growing! BeanFest is approaching on October 15 (see our website calendar) and we look forward to seeing many samples of student-grown beans there!

Happy Harvest!
